SATISFACTION GUARANTEED
Rain-X® Wood Protector Extended's superior beading technology keeps moisture
from penetrating and warping wood.
Surface prep:
1.Prior to application, use Mold Armor® Deck Wash to prepare surface by removing any contaminants such as mildew, dirt, oil and grease. Follow instructions on the package. 2. For severely weathered wood, or wood previously treated with a sealer or stain, use a pressure washer to strip away the top layer.
Application:
1. Stir or shake well. Pour some into a roller pan or pump-up sprayer. Replace cap and shake again. Pour remaining product into pan or sprayer. Intermix multiple cans to ensure even color. 2. Apply using pump-up sprayer, synthetic paint brush, paint roller or deck pad. Apply evenly, coating the length of the board in the direction of the wood grain. Maintain a wet edge by working small areas at a time to prevent lap marks. Do not allow sealer to pool on surface. If using a pump-up sprayer, always back brush for best results. One coat will provide sufficient protection. 3. Allow to dry 4-8 hours before walking on the surface. Dry time may vary due to temperature, humidity and surface porosity.
Helpful tips:
This product is intended for exterior surfaces only. Allow new pressure treated wood to weather for at least 30 days before applying sealer. Do not mix with any other products. Do not apply over previously painted or stained surfaces unless old finish is removed or completely weathered away. Surface and air temperature should be above 50°F during application and drying. Do not use when rain is expected within 8 hours. Test in an inconspicuous area to ensure you are satisfied with the appearance, as the color will vary depending on surface type and age. Avoid contact with surfaces not intended to be treated. Cover adjacent surfaces with plastic before applying sealer. To avoid overspray when using a pump-up sprayer, spray the deck floor and inside of railings first. Then either brush the outside of rails, or cover the deck floor and spray the outside of rails. For even color, don’t stop once you start applying. Allow 3 days after waterproofing before painting with an oil-based paint. Use an oil-based primer before painting with any latex paint.
Clean-Up:
Clean equipment and any overspray immediately with soap and water. Dried product can be removed with mineral spirits.
Storage:
Do not store below 40OF. Do not allow product to freeze.
Approximate coverage – sq. ft./gal.
Actual coverage will vary due to surface porosity, texture, dryness and condition.

Why is it important to use Rain-X® Wood Protectors and Water Sealers?
Your exterior surfaces, wood, concrete, brick or stone, are all at the mercy of the elements. Rain, snow and ice can penetrate exposed surfaces causing severe damage. In fact, unprotected wood is like a sponge when it rains. The water seeps into the porous grains, causing the wood to swell. While the wood will dry, once that swelling/drying cycle begins, the wood is open to damage, like cracking, warping and discoloration. But, severe weather is only part of the problem. The sun can cause just as much damage as water. Over time, the damage to surfaces from exposure to the elements is easy to see – uneven and warped wood planks are often a sign that the wood wasn’t protected after construction. Plus, whenever moisture is present, you have the threat of mold and mildew. If left unprotected, outdoor surfaces can become black in places, creating a blotchy and unattractive appearance. Finally, the sun will cause the wood to fade with darker colored woods lightening and lighter colored woods turning gray. But, Rain-X® can help you Outsmart The Elements® preserving the beauty of your outdoor surfaces, and saving you the time, hassles and expense of costly repairs.

How can I tell if my wood surface needs protecting?
Quite frankly, all wood, regardless of age, needs protecting. However, you may not know if your wood has already been protected. Here’s a simple test. If you pour some water on the surface and the color darkens and the water is absorbed, it means the surface needs to be protected. If the water puddles together or forms beads, then the surface is protected.
Where’s the best place to start when protecting exterior surfaces?
No matter what the surface is, whether or not it’s pressure-treated, or how old or new it might be, the best place to start is with a good cleaning. Only with a thorough cleaning can you be assured that you get the maximum benefits of the protective coating you apply. The goal is to eliminate dirt and other contaminants that might prevent good penetration of a sealer. We recommend using Mold Armor® E-Z Deck & Fence Wash to clean and restore the natural color and beauty to wood. It’s easy because there’s no scrubbing and it contains special buffered renewing agents that will brighten wood surfaces within 10 minutes and restore it to a natural, weathered look. Also, if your wood appears to have mold stains, E-Z Deck & Fence Wash removes dirt and mold & mildew stains from wood decks, siding and fences.
If the wood is pressure treated does it still need protection?
Yes. The term “pressure-treated” simply means that the wood was chemically coated to prevent insect damage and wood rot. It is not waterproofed. In fact, during the process of pressure treating, wood becomes even drier than untreated wood, allowing for more and quicker water absorption. Most pre-treated lumber is not mold and mildew resistant, however, some do contain a mold inhibitor. Remember, Rain-X® not only seals out moisture with its superior water beading technology, it also features Mold Armor® Antimicrobial Protection
Do I need to let wood age before I protect it?
Most pressure treated wood is too damp to coat right off the bat, and many conifers have excess oils that need to evaporate out before they can be efficiently coated. So, if the wood is brand new or pressure-treated, allow it to weather for 30 days before sealing.
Do wood fences and furniture also need protection?
Yes. In fact, as a rule, all exterior surfaces need protection. Whether it’s a vertical surface or a horizontal one, wood is subject to abuse and exposure to the elements. And chairs have surfaces at all the right angles for weather to damage them. The sun can also cause as much damage as rain. We recommend using Rain-X® on all your exterior wood surfaces.
Can you prevent mold and mildew from growing on decks and fences?
Yes. Rain-X® Multi-Surface Water Sealer, Rain-X® Wood Protector and Rain-X® Wood Protector Extended all feature our exclusive Mold Armor® Antimicrobial Protection that shields the dried finish from mold and mildew growth. Please note: before sealing, you first need to remove all traces of mold with a good exterior cleaner, like Mold Armor® E-Z Deck & Fence Wash.
How can I tell if an exterior surface is being protected and the sealer is working properly?
With Rain-X®, it’s easy to see. Because of the advanced water beading technology in Rain-X, water will actually bead up on the surface – and not penetrate the wood. You don’t need to wait for rain to check. After application, and once fully dried, according to the label, splash or drop some water on the surface. If the water forms beads and is not absorbed into the wood, it’s protected.
What is the best time of the year to seal an outdoor surface?
You can seal your deck in virtually any season. However, outside temperature is important to consider when using Rain-X® waterproofers. They should only be applied if the temperature is above 50° F. Also, it shouldn’t be raining or have rained in at least 8 hours priors to starting your project. If you are going to use a sprayer, we suggest picking a non-windy day.
